Fresh Superintendent at New Spitalfields Market
Nigel Shepherd has been appointed as the new Superintendent at
New Spitalfields Market, the UK’s leading horticultural market,
with effect from Monday 7 December.
For the last few years Nigel has worked at the BBC as a Change
Programme Manager but prior to this he worked in the City of London
Corporation’s Markets Department as Project and Support Manager.
Part of his role during that time included helping to initiate and
implement improvement projects at New Spitalfields Market, so he
already has experience and knowledge of the management and workings
of the market.
Mark Boleat, Chairman, Markets Committee, City of London
Corporation said:
“Nigel has an excellent knowledge of wholesale markets. He
has broad management experience and importantly, a clear
understanding of the need for balance in the relationship between
landlord and tenants.”
Nigel Shepherd’s appointment follows the untimely death of Ken
Alexander in the summer.
New Spitalfields Market houses the largest number of wholesalers
and has the highest turnover, making it the UK's leading
horticultural market. The continuing specialisation by wholesalers
in exotic fruit and vegetables means that New Spitalfields provides
the greatest choice of these products of any market in Europe.
Operating under a Royal Charter granted in 1682, Spitalfields moved
out of the City in 1991 and now occupies a purpose-built 31 acre
site in Leyton, east London.
A recent piece of research published by the Retail Markets Alliance
found that wholesale markets have performed better than the retail
markets and have remained stable during the economic downturn.
