The City of London has a responsibility
to ensure that its highways are as safe as possible for pedestrians
and all road users, to minimise congestion and to encourage
motorists to behave considerately. To help meet these
responsibilities the City of London has a dedicated
Road Safety Unit, provides
six car parks and 890
on-street parking bays. The
limited on-street parking is intended for short visits and is not
designed for longer stays.
The City effectively but fairly enforces
parking and traffic
regulations.

Traffic regulations
From 4 September 2006 The City of London began to enforce a
number of
traffic regulations previously enforced by the Police.
The aim of this is to increase safety and reduce congestion whilst
freeing up Police resources for other important work.
The
enforcement will be via remote CCTV which is already used
for parking and bus lane contraventions. The registered keeper of
the vehicle will be sent the penalty notice through the post.
The penalty charge is reduced by 50% if payment is received within
14 days of the date the penalty charge notice is served.
After 14 days the amount will revert to the full charge.

Car parks -
council
- Car parks within the geographic boundaries of a local authority
which are owned and run by the local authority. The authority may
publish a list of the car parks, their locations and
tariffs.

- Car parks within a local authority geographic area which are
owned and operated by private companies. The local authority
ensures that they operate in accordance with authority parking
policies.

Street parking -
clamping and removal
- Use of vehicle clamps to immobilise illegally parked vehicles.
If such a vehicle is taking up much needed space the local
authority will organise the removal of the vehicle.

Street parking -
enforcement and fines
- Enforcement of on street parking regulations (meters,
residential parking bays, yellow lines etc.) within the local
authority area. The council may issue illegally parked vehicles
with a ticket and impose fines.

permits
- Issuing of parking permits to residents who keep and use a car,
a van or motorcycle on a full-time basis within a controlled
parking zone. Businesses operating within a controlled zone area
may also qualify for permits.

- A controlled parking scheme in a street or area where parking
is organised in order to help residents park their
vehicles.
