Archive Adventures | Learning Zone | Schools | Further and higher education | Learning for all | Contact us

London Metropolitan Archives is committed to education for everyone. We want to increase awareness of archives and their potential for education, in an environment of collaboration, learning and fun. LMA is quite simply ‘The Memory of London’ and has relevance to every Londoner, and to anyone who is interested in London.

We offer services for school groups, professional development training for teachers, university students, young people, adult learners and families.

Front page of the Archives Adventure packNew Family Learning Resource Pack - Archive Adventures!

LMA in partnership with several other archives and institutions have created a family learning resource pack called Archive Adventures!

You can find out more and download the pack from our Resource pack galleries. We hope you find it useful.

LMA Learning Zone

The LMA Learning Zone is an interactive website introducing pupils to archives and the history of London. It is temporarily offline while essential maintenance is carried out. Please check back soon to visit the site.

For information on our range of education services, please read the rest of this page.

Schools

We introduce students to archives and their role and relevance in society. We believe that the immediacy of working with archives offers a unique way of bringing the past to life – come along and be convinced by our hands-on sessions! Literacy, numeracy, and geography can all be enhanced by the resources of LMA.

Sessions for KS2 and KS3

The archives at LMA mesh perfectly with many parts of the KS2 and KS3 curricula, including: Local History in London, Victorian Britain, The Second World War, and Britain since 1930. Take a look at the Resource pack galleries to see examples of the kind of striking images we use in our education work with schools.

We understand the pressure on teachers and we want to make a visit to LMA as useful as possible. We tailor our class sessions based on discussion with teachers about what you want, to assist your teaching in the most effective way. Contact us at the address below for a friendly chat. If there’s a topic you want us to look at, call and find out if we can! Be warned: our sessions are popular and get booked quickly!

Partner schools

We have established partnerships with a number of schools to develop our education programmes. Being an LMA partner school means that we will work with you to develop a bespoke session, often with the benefit of take-away resources at preferential rates. We will also turn to partner schools in the first instance when we secure funding for added-value activities such as costumed interpretation. In return we ask that the partner school engages in a dialogue about what we are doing, and this helps us improve our services to them and to other schools. If you are interested in becoming a partner school, please let us know when you call to book a class session.

Further and Higher Education

Learning through archives can be just as rewarding for those in higher education. We offer archive orientation sessions for Further and Higher Education student groups, highlighting LMA’s strength as a place for individual research.

LMA is regularly used as a case study for arts policy and management students from City University. LMA is now used as a venue for courses run by Birkbeck College, and we welcome PGCE students to attend our INSET days. If you are a tutor and would like to arrange a session for your group, please contact us.

Professional training opportunities for educators - INSET
LMA hosts a programme of thematic INSET days throughout the year. The programme is aimed at teachers and educators in any field who are interested in the possibilities of learning through archives and the wider heritage sector. Expert speakers come from museums, other archives, creative learning schemes and of course, from LMA.
Check out What’s On for forthcoming INSET days. Contact us for details of each day’s programme and to book your place.

Learning for everyone

Learning at LMA isn’t just about being at school or college!  What’s On features events for learners of all ages, including talks, workshops, book readings and more. We run family days and summer schools for family historians and first-time archive users. LMA is here for every part of London’s community to enjoy.
