Beryl Touchard: light, surface and texture

2 - 28 July
Exhibitions
Barbican Library

Beryl Touchard is currently focusing on a theme which relates to our natural environment and this series of work reflects the landscape and coastal areas of the West Coast of Scotland. It
investigates the atmospheric phenomena that come from the forces of nature, such as the rain, mist and wind, and the changes these make to the land and sea. Beryl’s emotional response to these elements is to investigate and explore them through painting, printmaking and installation. The mark making and the materials which are used in the process explore depth, space and tension on the surface. She captures the mood and atmosphere in an imaginative and
spontaneous way.

Dickens’s tales of the City

Wednesday 14 July 2010
6.00 pm - 7.30 pm
Literary event
Guildhall Library

Michael Slater, author of an acclaimed new biography of Charles Dickens, will speak about  London and Londoners as a vital and inexhaustible source of inspiration for the novelist. Dickens’s knowledge of the metropolis was, like his own Sam Weller’s, ‘both extensive and peculiar’ and, from his earliest publication until his last, London and Londoners formed his primary subject-matter. For him the city’s streets at night were like a ‘great magic lantern’. This lecture will explore this intense relationship between writer and city and consider some of the results.
