Key organisations

Action for Kids offers a variety of services for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities aged 14-26, providing work related learning, mobility equipment and office experience. Action for Kids offers students the opportunity to come to their head office in Hornsey to do real work in a real work place and provides an outreach program teaching work related learning in special and mainstream schools.

Aidis The Aidis Trust gives services, advice, information and support on everything to do with computing for Disabled People so that whatever health, condition or age they are, they can get the most from technology.

  • lets Disabled People know how to maintain and adapt their computer; tells them about a huge range of adaptations with installation and user guides; has reviews by end users; and has a shop giving significant discounts on adaptations and computers for people who get DLA or AA.
  • A telephone HELPLINE - 0845 120 3719. The national lottery funded helpline is open from 9.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. It gives straightforward, non-techie advice on computers and adaptations. If Disabled People are stuck, or their computer is not working properly, the helpline staff will help solve problems, either over the phone or through remote support software.

CAE  The Centre for Accessible Environments offers information and training on the accessibility of the built environment for disabled people. They are committed to the provision of buildings and spaces that are safe, convenient and enjoyable to use by everyone, including disabled and older people and, as the centre of excellence on the technicalities of access provision, they offer a range of services including consultancy.

Deaf 24/7 is an internet resource point for any one interested in deaf related information especially in United Kingdom.

Equality & Human Rights Commission This body incorporates the former Disability Rights Commission, Commission for Racial Equality and the Equal Opportunities Commission. It champions equality and human rights for all, working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.

The Employers Forum on Disability  The national employers membership organisation focused on training and employment of disabled people. They have information on consultants and trainers active in this field.

Joint Mobility Unit Access Partnership  JMU is an access consultancy working to make the built environment more accessible for disabled people. They undertake this through policy, research and consultancy activities in their three main fields of interest - buildings, transport and the street environment.

Listening Books provides books on audio to anyone who suffers from an illness or disability and finds it difficult or impossible to hold or read a book. The service works through a postal lending library.

MENCAP  The Royal Society for Mentally Handicapped Children & Adults is the leading charity working for and with people with learning difficulties and their families. MENCAP promotes training and recruitment of people with learning difficulties, and has a particular focus on supporting employees and employers through the PATHWAY scheme.

MIND  A mental health charity that campaigns for a better life for everyone experiencing mental distress. MIND works for the right to lead an active and valued life in the community, is an influential voice on mental health issues and can provide training in mental health awareness.

RADAR  The Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation is a UK organisation run by and for disabled people. RADAR campaigns for equal rights for disabled people and provides information and advice on issues relating to disability.

Royal National Institute of Blind People  There are around two million people in the UK with sight problems and RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) is the leading charity offering practical support, advice and information to anyone with a sight problem. Their pioneering work helps - not just with braille, Talking Books and computer training but with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges.

Royal National Institute for the Deaf  The Royal National Institute for the Deaf is the leading charity working with deaf people. Their web site provides a range of information and links to related parts of the organisation, such as Sound Advantage, which can advise on equipment, and has links to regional offices and groups. The RNID also provides a consultancy service including access audits.

UKDPC The United Kingdom Disabled People's Council is the UK's democratic representative national organisation, which is a member of the worldwide Disabled People's Movement, through its membership of Disabled Peoples' International.

Communication and interpretation services

Royal Association in Aid of Deaf People  RAD strives to meet the individual needs of deaf children and adults and deafblind people through the provision of services and the use of RAD centres for deaf people.
