Most responsible organisations now understand that sustainability lies at the heart of long-term business success and the Sustainable City Awards aim to recognise and reward best practice in this rapidly developing arena.

Sustainable City Awards at the Egyptian HallEntries are welcomed from business, public and voluntary sector organisations. Past winners include BT, The Berkeley Group, F&C Asset Management, Sainsbury’s, the London Cycling Campaign and HM Prison Services.

The awards are judged by a panel of respected environmental and sustainability experts. Since their launch in 2001, the awards have grown to become the most prestigious sustainability awards in the UK.

The Sustainable City Awards are run in partnership with 20 organisations, including livery companies, trade bodies, voluntary sector organisations and businesses. Representatives from each of these organisations join the judging panel to select winners and runners-up across the award categories.

This year, the Awards have received over 120 applications with outstanding quality throughout. Awarded across eight categories, the Sustainable City Awards were presented by Harriett Lamb, Director of The Fairtrade Foundation and were attended by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, David Lewis.

The winners of the 2008 Sustainable City Awards were announced at Mansion House in a ceremony hosted by Harriet Lamb, Director of the Fairtrade Foundation. All entrants have been invited to join the ceremony, to celebrate their achievements and to learn from each other.

Sustainable City Awards Winners Beales Hotel with Harriet Lamb The overall winner voted for by the judging panel, was Beales Hotels (pictured right), one of the oldest family businesses in London. The firm takes environmental and social responsibility seriously and in addition to an ambitious programme to source produce locally, has achieved a 60% reduction in landfill waste, 40% reduction in water use and a huge reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Judges felt Beales Hotel is a shining example of what can be achieved when small businesses take their environmental responsibilities seriously.
