The City of London's Economic Development Office provides support to a range of regeneration partnerships and projects in boroughs neighbouring the Square Mile. In addition, the City of London oversees a number of grant giving trusts and awards grants to organisations through its Finance Committee (see below).

The City of London has contributed to venture capital funds from which loans maybe obtained for small businesses. It is keen to ensure that finance is accessible to all sections of the community and has contributed to the London Business Growth Fund, set up to help disadvantaged entrepreneurs with business propositions gain access to bank finance in order to start up or expand their business, and the Baring English Growth Fund which finances small to medium sized well-managed companies with growth potential in London and the South.

Funding for the expansion of small businesses and business start-ups in neighbouring boroughs may be obtained through Business Link for London and East London Small Business Centre.

Finance Committee Grants

Introduction

The City of London’s primary contribution to the voluntary sector is made through the The City Bridge Trust  which makes grants in excess of £16 million a year to charitable projects benefiting the inhabitants of Greater London.

In addition, the City of London’s Finance Committee awards a small number of grants to organisations. Requests for funding are considered twice a year by the Finance Grants Sub Committee.

Who is eligible

Grants are awarded to organisations, but not to individuals.
The Committee requires that applicants are able to demonstrate a strong connection with the City, ie that the applicant’s work will assist residents or workers of the Square Mile. A very limited number of grants are also awarded to organisations appealing for a special nationwide charitable activity.

A number of guidelines are observed by the Committee in determining eligibility.

The Finance Committee also awards grants from the City Educational Trust Fund which has specific criteria in addition to the above.

If you meet the above criteria and are eligible to apply for a grant from the Finance Committee or require further information details of how to apply are available here.
