Street care and cleaning - local waste plan

Cleansing Services provide Waste Collection, Waste Disposal, Street Cleansing and Public Convenience services in accordance with the requirements of current legislation. Whilst observing the requirements of legislation Cleansing Services must also meet the requirements set out in the City of London's Unitary Developement Plan (UDP).

The current UDP requires that Cleansing Services meet the following policy commitments:

Policy Com 5

To provide widespread distribution of public conveniences which efficiently meets public demand and to improve signposting and access for disabled people.

Policy Util 5

To encourage more sustainable waste management practices which are based on the best practicable environmental option for the local circumstances of the City.  To encourage practices which:

  • reduce waste generation at source
  • re-use waste for the same or other purpose
  • recover value from waste through recycling
  • recover energy through waste incineration
  • move waste by river or rail

Policy Util 6

To require adequate provision within all developments for the storage, presentation for collection, and removal of waste, unless exceptional circumstances make it impractical; to encourage provision to allow for the separate storage of recyclable waste where appropriate.

Policy Riv 9

To maintain a facility for river freight transport at Walbrook Wharf

The City of London's UDP was published in April 2002
