Design & heritage

The City strives to improve the built environment. It works with architects and developers to ensure a high standard in the design of buildings and spaces, carries out improvements to the street scene and preserves the historic environment.

Street scene enhancement

The City promotes environmental enhancement schemes and public realm improvement projects. It operates the Street Scene Challenge to promote public/private partnership schemes to achieve these projects. Click here for more information on street scene enhancement.

Historic environment

The City has a unique historic heritage which the City Corporation seeks to preserve and enhance. Click here for more information on listed buildings, conservation areas and archaeology.

Protected views

Many views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Monument are protected. See our Supplementary Planning Guidance.

Trees

Trees contribute to the City’s townscape and many are protected. The location of protected trees can be viewed on the interactive City maps.

More information

Policies and guidance on design and heritage are set out in our Unitary Development Plan and Planning policy publications.
