What do we mean by 'parent'?
These days families come in all shapes and sizes including
single parents (mothers or fathers), three generations of extended
family living in one house, complex step families or couples living
together, including same sex couples and their children.
There are also grandparents and other relatives caring for
children, often in challenging circumstances, as well as foster
carers looking after children who are unable to live with their
birth parents. Fathers can be forgotten when services think
about informing and engaging with parents so it is important that
it is remembered that fathers whether they are resident with their
child or not have a crucial role to play in their child’s
development.
For the purposes of the City's Parents' Strategy the term
'parent' means the adult carers in all these family models.
