Performance / stage licences for children

Application for a licence must be signed by the parents and accompanied by a photograph. The Local Authority must be satisfied that arrangements for the supervision and protection of the child are adequate, and that the disruption to the child's education is kept to a minimum.

The legislation which demands this licensing is as follows: The Children and Young Persons Acts 1933 and 1963 The Children (performances) Regulations 1968.

Employment of children

There are various restrictions to the type of work children can do. Children may not work in places where gambling takes place, where alcohol is consumed or in an environment that may be dangerous to them.

Children between 13 and 16 need a work permit if they are in paid employment.

Children in full time compulsory education must have permits even when they reach 16 until the official school leaving date. This is the last Friday in June.

The hours children can work

After four hours a child must have a minimum of one hour break.

School days

A child may work a maximum of two hours between 7.00am and 7.00pm.

Saturday or during school holidays

A child may work a maximum of five hours a day if they are under 15 and eight hours once 15 or over.

During school holidays

13 and 14 year olds may only work 25 hours a week. 15 and 16 year olds in full time compulsory education may work 35 hours a week.  Again, they may only work between 7.00am and 7.00pm.

Sunday

A child may work a maximum of two hours between 7.00am and 11.00am.

Applying for a permit

Prospective employers are responsible for applying for a permit.

The employer signs the form to confirm they will abide by the law regarding the child's employment and that they have the appropriate insurance cover.
