The Lord Mayor's Work in the UK

Promoting Financial Services

Reception at Mansion House In the UK the Lord Mayor hosts several hundred meetings and receptions for a wide range of City-oriented organisations, and travels to other UK financial centres to keep in touch with regional activity. The Lord Mayor is often asked to report to parliamentary groups on business opportunities abroad and on financial and professional services in the UK.

The Lord Mayor also provides a platform for the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Foreign Secretary, the Governor of the Bank of England, the Chairman of the Financial Services Authority and the Mayor of (greater) London to make major speeches to City business audiences at a number of events during the year held either at Mansion House or Guildhall.

Lord Mayor presides over the City of London's governing bodies – the Court of Aldermen and the Court of Common Council and hosts and receives hospitality from the Livery, and participates in charitable projects.

The ethics of modern business, and solutions it can offer to social problems, are taken very seriously by the City of London Corporation and are firmly on the Lord Mayor's agenda. The Lord Mayor often has a chance to address issues around climate change, corporate responsibility and philanthropy both here and abroad.
