The City of London owns and runs four famous markets,
Billingsgate, Leadenhall, Smithfield and Spitalfields.
World-famous Billingsgate market is the UK's largest inland fish
market.
Leadenhall market is now a thriving pedestrianised shopping
location. The Grade II listed market is one of the City's most
attractive leisure areas and an important shopping location for
City residents and workers.
The food markets are members of the
World Union of Wholesale
Markets (WUWM) and the National Association of
British Market Authorities (NABMA).

The Markets Department supports the City of London’s Community
Strategy theme of an ‘Inclusive and outward looking City’ and is
responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the City
of London’s three Wholesale Food Markets: Billingsgate, Smithfield,
and New Spitalfields. The Markets Directorate provides a strategic
and co-ordinating role in developing and improving strategy,
communications, finance, personnel, health & safety, and the
promotions of the Markets. It provides a central 'voice' for the
markets and enables the Superintendents to concentrate on the
day-to-day operation of the markets and maintain close contact with

New Spitalfields is the leading
horticultural market in the UK. In 1991 the market moved out of the
City to a purpose-built 31-acre site in Leyton, East
London.
Smithfield
meat market is Britain's largest meat
market, attracting buyers not only from London but from much
further afield. It is one of the oldest markets in
London.

Farmers'
markets
- Farmers' markets gives the opportunity to buy fresh and quality
local produce. The local authority provides a list of farmers
market in the area.

Market stalls
- Traders are able to rent stalls in local markets from the
council subject to payment of the required fee and production of
required documentation (insurance etc.). Stalls may be available
for rent on the day or by a regular arrangement.
