Research programme

Featured sections

The financial and business services sector is complex and rapidly evolving, and the maintenance of London's position as the world's leading centre depends on an ongoing understanding of the forces that affect this industry. Our research programme aims to provide accurate, timely and well-focused analysis to policy-makers, both inside and outside the City of London, to help them understand the performance trends and needs of the London economy - particularly the City-based financial and business services clusters.

Our research programme has three objectives:

  • To highlight the opportunities and threats facing the City's competitive advantages as the centre of choice for international financial and related business services activity.
  • To help us support the provision of an adequate physical infrastructure to meet the City's needs.
  • To inform policy-making in both public and private sectors on the opportunities and threats facing the London economy, thus taking advantage of our unique position and perspective at the physical, historic and economic heart of Greater London.

While our research team undertakes a limited amount of investigative and analytical work with its own resources, major projects are usually commissioned from external consultants. Most of this work develops from the team's research agenda. However, we are always interested in hearing from researchers who wish to contribute to the research programme, or agencies who wish to suggest topics or gain support for research that falls within its broad remit.

Stakeholders and members of the public wishing to keep abreast of current statistics and economic trends relevant to the City can opt to receive electronic copies of our reports as they are published. They can also subscribe to our free email services: City News Monitor, a weekly round-up of economic news with links to further information; and our quarterly publications, City Economy Digest and City Business Review, which provide in-depth analyses of the latest economic trends in the Square Mile.

If you would like to subscribe to any of our publications please email economic.research@cityoflondon.gov.uk.
