Legal advice


Child protection orders
The social services department can apply for emergency protection order of 8 to 15 days to safeguard a child who may be in danger living at home.
Council - insurance claims
The citizen can file a claim if the council is responsible for causing personal injury or property damage. They must demonstrate that the council was at fault. The citizen has up to 3 years from the date of the incident to pursue a claim for personal injury and 6 years for property damage.
Debt counselling
This service offers free confidential debt counselling service to citizens. They can advise on different types of debt such as rent and mortgage arrears, credit card debts and bank loans.
General legal advice
Access to the Community Legal Service which aims to ensure that people can get information and advice about their legal rights and help with enforcing them
Legal aid
Free legal advice may be obtained from solicitors under the advice and assistance scheme. If you are on a low income Legal Aid may pay for your solicitor.
Power of attorney - applications
Power of Attorney is a legal document whereby one person gives another person or persons the power to act on his or her behalf with regard to his or her property and financial affairs. The local authority Social Services department may be involved in applications for Power of Attorney for their clients and may work with other agencies to monitor abuses.

Wills and testaments service provides general advice on making a will and offers contacts who will assist people wishing to make a will.

Support and advice to victims of crime and people who are witnesses to crimes.
