Amounts payable

Each year the City sets the maximum amount of council tax for each band; your council tax bill shows the valuation band applicable to your dwelling. The amount payable is the amount due for your band less any entitlement to a reduction. Limited appeals can be made.

All properties are valued according to the amount the Listing Officer believed to be their capital value as at 1 April 1991. The current bands have been set by the Government on this basis. Council tax is set for each band, with band A having the lowest value and band H the highest. Each band pays a proportion of band D (for example, band A is set at six ninths of band D and Band H is set at 18 ninths of band D).

How to pay

The methods of payment available are detailed below.

Direct debit

A simple way of paying your council tax whereby you only have to sign a direct debit instruction once and amounts will be collected automatically as they fall due. The direct debit scheme comes with the following guarantee that is offered by all banks and building societies taking part in the scheme.

The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own bank or building Society. If the amount to be paid or the payments date change the City of London will notify you ten working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If an error is made by the City of London or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid. You can cancel a direct debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society but please also send a copy of your letter to us.

If you fail to keep to the arrangement the whole year's council tax will become due and payable. Failure to pay the outstanding sum, including any arrears, will result in court proceedings being instituted to obtain a liability order. Do not ignore any notices - tel 020 7332 1882 to discuss your problems.
