Council tax benefit - overpayments

An overpayment of Council Tax Benefit is any amount of Council Tax Benefit that you are not entitled to. This overpayment is called ‘excess benefit’ and is recovered from your Council Tax.  If you have been overpaid we will recover the ‘excess benefit’ from your Council Tax and you will be sent a revised Council Tax bill.

If you are overpaid we will take into account any benefit you should have received if you had told us of the change at the correct time. You can sometimes reduce an overpayment by telling us what your true circumstances were at the time of the overpayment.

You can avoid overpayments by telling us of changes in your circumstances immediately. If you know a change is going to happen in the future tell us before it happens.

If you are in doubt about the council tax benefit you should be receiving you can use our Benefits Calculator or contact the Benefits Service (quoting your reference, if you have one) on 020 7332 3937 or by email.
